VTC 2014 Final day!

It has been a long month and we have toiled hard on the erg gathering blisters, sore backsides, backs and arms along the way. On a positive note, as Nick mentioned we should all be feeling rather proud at pushing ourselves and each other to row more metres / faster times than we ever thought possible.

It has been an epic challenge this year and we are currently settled in 18th place out of 338 world-wide teams. I am sure the final tally will slightly alter whilst our ETT work-out warriors upload their metres from different parts of the world and time zones.

I will complete a more detailed summary of individual team mate achievements at the weekend.

Enjoy your time away from the erg tomorrow folks ; )

VTC 2014 Penultimate day

Bust out that 70's disco or hard rock for your last row tomorrow. Give it your all and Empty the Tanks team mates.

We have been bumped down to 17th place by a huge school / university team called Arlington-Belmont Crew who have squeezed past us by 200k. Hopefully a couple of team mates have some metres in the bag which they have yet to upload?!

ETT HM results so far

Wow! We have got some excellent results so far for the ETT HM challenge - see the table below.
No pressure for the remainder of team mates who are yet to do their half marathon......

Its the ETT Half Marathon week

Its the final week of the VTC 2014; otherwise known as the ETT HM week!
Since my last HM post we have had a few extra team mates put their names down to get involved.

The ETT HM crew consists of:

Previous HM time HM pace Actual Result Difference?
Matt C 01:27:09 below 02:03
Steve C 01:17:23 below 01:50
Nick W 01:46:00 below 02:30
Karyn 01:38:57 below 02:20
Caroline 01:46:42 below 02:31
Mark B 01:19:30 below 01:52
Lucas 01:27:00 below 02:03
Jeff K 01:35:44 below 02:16
Norman 01:28:30 below 02:05 01:27:41 49 seconds faster
Lisa 01:40:57 below 02:23
John G 01:24:58 below 02:08

Norman has already rowed his half marathon and improved his previous result with 49 seconds to spare! Nice work there.

Tips and advice for a HM
  • Dave P suggests having a gel / drink handy just in case you need to have a slurp mid-session
  • Dave P breaks down the full 21,097 metres into a series of 5k sessions to make the task more managable. In the final 10k he increases his pace every 2.5k depending on how his is feeling and then smashes the final 2k
  • Caroline J advices to eat your prefered fuel at least an hour in advance of your HM; any closer to the time and you may feel a little nauseous
  • Matt C has been in training for weeks and has followed this plan by Eddie Fletcher
Godd luck to everybody rowing a HM this week and to the rest of the ETT team who are toiling away on their indoor rowing machines for the Virtual Team Challenge this January.

VTC 2014 Week three

We have entered the third week still firmly in 16th position out of 337 world-wide teams. We have now rowed over 6 million metres as a collective! Great work ETT'ers.

I will blog in more detail this weekend. In the meantime, keep calm and row on!

VTC Days 19 and 20

We have hit 5 million metres and are holding onto our 16th place position.
Talking of impressive milestones, several team mates have achieved some amazing results recently:

Mark B has reached 12 million lifetime metres. Nice work there Mark; only another 3 million to go to claim your 'Rowing Company' shorts and t-shirt!

Matt B received a Silver medal for the LTA row at the Cornish Indoor Rowing Championships! You are an inspiration to all fellow ETT'ers.

Norman C achieved a Half Marathon PB in a time of 2:04.7 - nice work Norman.
Lisa K completed a Full Marathon - let us know your time Lisa ; )

Team mates have also pulled in lots of metres; here are the team mates who are currently in the 100k+ clubs.

VTC 2014 Days 17 and 18

Still sweet sixteen in the third week of the challenge. We are motoring ahead with the metres and have a 230k lead on Team Canada. I don't know how feasible it would be to catch PNRA/Mercer who are over 800k ahead in 15th place - who knows, our HM week may give us the advantage!?

Talking of HM's Norman C has joined the crew and maybe Lisa too (?). So that now puts the participation up to (possibly) 10 members. This could potentially add an additional 97,000 metres in the final week. Oh yeah - Go ETT'ers!

If you need some extra motivation for the last part of the challenge (or for the HM), I would reccommend the autobiography of Chrissie Wellington the British Triathlete and four time World Ironman Champion. A great read; she didn't become a pro-athelete until she was 30 - so there's still hope for us all yet!

VTC 2014 Days 15 and 16

Wahoo, we are still in 16th place, but by a very narrow margin of about 25,000 metres - it could change any minute because Team Canada are so close behind us we need to be diligent and make sure they remain there!

16Empty the TanksVirtual Club4,048,5874786,140

Because we have passed the sign-up deadline with 47 team mates we will be in the 21-50 members category for the remainder of the challenge. If we compare ourselves with those teams we are still in third place out of 33 similar sized teams.

Now let's discuss some individual achievements from our fellow team mates during the past fortnight:
  • Nick W is at the top of the team and the sole member of the 400k+ club - Excellent stuff Nick!
  • Steve C is in second place and the only other team mate to have surpassed 300k+. Well done Steve.
  • Todor, Jeff, and Mark B are slugging things out for third, fourth and fifth places in the 200k+ club. Keep it up gents you are doing really well!
  • Lisa is our highest performing female team mate with an impressive 180k+. Fantastic stuff Lisa!
  • Fred, Karyn, Beat, Rob D, Teodora, Ric Y, Leslie, Matt C and John F are fully paid up members of the 100k+ club. Can the girls keep in the top ten by the end of the challenge?
  • Diggy, Lucas, Craig, John G, Caroline, Robert, Mike B, Hector, Andy S, Michael and Bouke have all rowed between 50k - 99k. Keep up this pace and you could hit 200k by the end of January.
  • Jean, Joe S, Norman, Preston, Paul M, Jonathan, Michael C, Matt B, Jim M, Edward, Dave P, David B, Michale D, Mike F, Bill, John B, Mark K and Karen B have rowed between 4k - 49k
Excellent work folks.
Keep up the hard slog, we are reaching the mid-way point of the challenge so have your end goal in mind and dig deep for the second half of the VTC 2014.

VTC 2014 Day 14

Two weeks into the January competition and we have moved back up into 15th place but Team Canada are only 1,000 metres behind us! Fingers crossed we can keep our slot for the next two weeks!?
I suspect we may be yo-yo-ing back and forth until we hit the final week - then we will hit those unsuspecting rival teams with eight (maybe more) team mates throwing down Half Marathon sessions which will mean an additional 168,776 metres!

15Empty the TanksVirtual Club3,542,9794677,021

Fellow ETT'ers have had some great ideas about motivating members to get involved in the VTC:
  • Matt C suggests encouraging more team mates to sign up and get involved - there is only one day left before the VTC entry closes so let's try our best to ecourage some more ETT'ers to get stuck in.
  • Nick W suggests if we aim for a mid-way taget so we have a focus beore the end of the challenge

Monday, 13 January 2014

VTC 2014 Days 12 and 13

We have slipped down into 17th position today with Team Canada 40k ahead of us in 16th place!
We also need to keep our eyes peeled for the combined Sub 7 / Oarsome / Paddy Power team who are on our tails.

17Empty the TanksVirtual Club3,247,2064572,160

On a positive note if you compare us against teams of a similar size (21-50 members) we are in third place!

Any ideas about how to sneak back into 16th place folks?

VTC 2014 Day eight and a HM challenge

Wow, in the last post we had a whole bunch of discussion about the VTC goals, training regimes and other juicy information. Very entertaining reading.

Matt C has set himself a goal of a half marathon (21,097m) on the 30th January and he has been joined by new team mates Nick and Karyn.

Mark B might get involved, but pointed out that the 30th was a Thursday and he would prefer a weekend time-slot. I would definately join in this too, but after a 06:00 - 19:00 working day I wouldn't have the necessary drive for a decent time.

Why don't we go for a HM in the last week of January? At least that gives ETT'ers a bit more flexibility and it will boost our VTC metres too.

Who else is going to join us for the HM challenge?
21,097 metres (in one sitting) between 25 - 31 January 2014

Matt C
Nick
Karyn
Caroline
Mark B?

If you have rowed a HM before let me know your previous time and we can see how you perform in the January 2014 HM.

VTC 2014 Day seven and another new team mate!

We have been joined by another new team mate - yipee!

Nick, 43, is a proud owner of a C2 which he bought in October 2013.
We are happy to have you onboard the team Nick and thanks for the 100+ metres you have contributed - you are now at the top of the ETT team!

It has been an interesting start to the year with some big teams joining the VTC ranks; Diggy mentioned he had spotted our old rivals Team Canada sneaking up the ranks with 50+ team mates.

We also need to keep an eye on our friendly rivals the Greenville Indoor Rowing team who invited us all to row in their local rivers and lakes in the US during one of the team challenges last year.

What are your goals for this challenge?

Are you aiming for 50k, 100k, 200k..... 500k?
What is helping you through the longer rows?
Let us know your indulgences to help you through the January work-out blues... Is it left over Christmas chocolate, coffee or some crazy tunes?

I am loving Daft Punk right now - those crazy robots!

VTC 2014 Days four & five, new team mates and new challenges!

New Team Mate:

We have been joined by a new team mate Matt Collard, who completed a marathon row in November in 2:58:33.9 for the Princes Trust charity (his justgiving page is here if you want to contribute).

He is currently in training for his next marathon on the 6th April 2014, the same day as the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race. The company Matt works for are the primary sponsor of the race, so he is hoping to complete the marathon at the Boat Race itself alongside the Thames (details to be confirmed nearer the time). Matt suggested we could think of an idea for a team challenge or event on the day and he would love to have some fellow ETT'ers around for support or to take part in the challenge in some way too - any ideas team mates?

LTA Indoor Rowing World Record Attempt:

Talking of rowing challenges, Matt Brewster is attempting to set a new world record in the LTA adaptive category over 100k which he is rowing in aid of Sport Relief at Coombe Dean School in Plymouth on 21st March 2014, he has set up a page on www.justgiving.com/matt100k if you would like to support him.

VTC 2014:

On day five of the challenge and we are in 13th position out of 254 world-wide teams and have collectively rowed nearly a million metres in five days.

Keep rowing hard ETT'ers!

British Online Rowing Championships 2014 - Not happening

VTC 2014 Days two and three

Its day three of the VTC and we have slipped from our initial top ten position to 13th out of 235 world-wide teams.

Keep rowing hard ETT'ers!

VTC 2014 Day One

On the first day of the New Year; the first day of the VTC 19 team mates rose to the challenge and probably stuck to their New Year's resolution of keeping active and fit.

The following ETT'ers have contributed towards our day one total of 250k:

VTC 2014 = Day one = 19 team mates = 10/177 world-wide teams = 253,426 metres
