Dog Days of Summer

August will be a busy month because as well as a little team challenge called the CTC (you might have heard of it) there is an individual challenge on the C2 site called the Dog Days of Summer.

It runs from August 1–28 and features a different total distance goal each week.

The Details

  • Row or ski, indoors or outdoors, completing each of the following four distance goals during the timeframes indicated and log them in your online logbook:
    • Week 1, Aug. 1–7: 20,000 metres
    • Week 2, Aug. 8–14: 30,000 metres
    • Week 3, Aug. 15–21: 40,000 metres
    • Week 4, Aug. 22–28: 50,000 metres
The distance goals do not have to be done in one sitting, but must be done during the timeframe indicated. By the end of the challenge, you will have accumulated 140,000 metres.
  • This is an individual challenge. (You do not need to belong to a team to participate.)
  • Metres must be entered online.
  • Indoor rower, on water, SkiErg, and on snow metres count.

C2 UK Forum comments

Since posting our chosen 10, 549 metres Cross Team Challenge on the C2 UK Forum people from other teams have responded with generally positive comments:

  • I must say I like that choice of an odd distance - Dougie, Sub 7
  • Good choice - Andrew, Free Spirits
  • I like it - Jason
  • I like it - but just to save the discussions - mention standing starts - Paul
  • Forgive the pedantry but isn't that a quarter marathon, or a ma? - Mad Team
  • I think this one's a bit long and will have a lower participation level than normal - Rod, Sub 7 (there is always one!)

Empty the Tanks August CTC

I have posted on the C2 UK Forum on the Cross Team Challenge thread that we have voted for the half, half marathon (10,549 metres) as this was the most popular row voted by Empty the Tanks members.
We will see what people think if they post comments about it over the next few weeks (I will keep you updated). It will be interesting because the last four or five Cross Team Challenges have been speed and short distance related so it will give endurance rowers something to get their teeth into.

Three boats floated in the July CTC

We have three boats floated in the points rankings for this months Cross Team Challenge.
Edward J has rowed an improved time for the CTC and has jumped into boat three!

Boat one is in the top ten and has gained 20 points for the team. Well done to; Mark, Ric, Joe, Chris and Yee-Ann for their impressive distances.

We need four more rowers for boat four.

8 x 500 metres with 1 minute rests 14%
8 x 31 seconds with 15 second rests 12%

Well done team mates and a big thanks to Chris and Yee-Ann who got boat two floated today.
Ten members have risen to the hard-core challenge of the 20 x 45 seconds with 15 second rests so have two boats in the points rankings in the first week of July.

Day one July CTC

Five team mates have rowed the 20 x 45 sec 15 sec rest but we have yet to get a boat floated because we need a lightweight or another female rower in boat one.

The sweaty July CTC

Normally in polite society you keep sweat-related discussions to yourself but I know that I'm in good company with Empty the Tanks. If you thought excess sweat was an issue on the 5k CTC just wait until you've tried the 20 x 45 seconds with 15 second rests.

I did my row half an hour a go and I am still recovering from the sweat-fest, although because I'm a lady I should say I'm glowing (like a crazy radio-active zombie).

My advice for the 20 x 45 seconds with 15 second rests is:
  • Keep a water bottle VERY close to the erg (there is barely enough time to drink in the 15 second intervals)
  • Have a towel close at hand to avoid slipping off the erg because of the amount of sweat
  • Consider wearing your swimsuit and take a dip after the row has finished

Final positions for the June CTC

Great participation from 23 team mates during this months Cross Team Challenge of 5k 24spm.
A number of last minute PB's from Mark, David J and Yee-Ann helped boost the team up the points rankings. Fabulous stuff folks!
